THE FEATURE RACE

Two-year-old races, in the main, are always hard to predict, and this year’s renewal of the Cash Pot “Only One For Me” Trophy (six furlongs) did more than enough to enhance that trend of thought.

Slammer, a bay colt by Savoy Stomp – Fedora, the only maiden in the field of seven, delivered a performance of quite significant note to defeat stable companion Perfect Brew. It was a well-executed ride by Dick Cardenas and trainer Richard Azan must be commended for finishing first and second in this major juvenile contest.

That a maiden horse won this race has placed several notches on the belt of Slammer and while there are many mountains still to climb, the Cash Pot victory may well be a sign, a precursor, of what is to come in the future.

The leading filly in the Cash Pot was Silent Mission bred by Savoy Stomp – Lady Mandi. This is of consequence because it meant that the offspring of the HAM Stable Limited-based stallion Savoy Stomp finished first and third.

This is the first crop of runners produced by Savoy Stomp, who is bred by Medaglia D’Oro – Crystal Current by A P Indy. It is way too early but based just on the performances of a few of his offspring, it appears that horses fathered by Savoy Stomp will have no issues with the longer races. Of course, only time will tell.

Mention has to be made of the performance of 2-5 favourite Prncsshootingstar, who came into the Cash Pot with great expectations, especially after a dominant maiden win over three furlongs on August 3 and some eye-catching exercise spins. Prncsshootingstar a bay filly by Buzz Nightmare – Khaleesi’s Revenge, did as expected by going to the lead but the throttle was turned off in the straight, ending in fourth place.

The big jump from three furlongs to six furlongs may have played a role in the performance of Prncsshootingstar, as the QUICK GALLOPER, at this time, is not aware of any ailments which may or may not be had by the filly.

It would be unwise to rule out Prncsshootingstar in the future, with all things being equal.

THE SPRINT

The Cash Pot Sprint Dash ended with the run-on sprinters dominating the out and out sprinters. After the speedballs, Patriarch, Victory Turn, and the slow-starting Father Patrick had their say at the front of the pack, it was left to Duke (Robert Halledeen) and Laban (Youville Pinnock) to strut their finishing prowess in the final furlong and a half of the five-furlong distance of the Sprint Dash.

Career win number nine from 43 starts for the Gary Subratie trained Duke. Spare a thought for Laban, who since making it to the Open Allowance grade has been very consistent and, for sure, his time is coming soon.

THE TRAINERS

The wealth was shared by 10 trainers as all 10 races on the card were won by 10 different conditioners.

The race for the championship between champion Anthony Nunes and Jason DaCosta continued apace.

After the 10 races were completed based on preliminary checks using the figures provided by the official racebook, DaCosta earned approximately $200,000 more than Nunes.
