KINGSTON, Jamaica – Trainer Gary Subratie turned out to be the ‘golden boy’ after his importee Sweet N Smart won the final race of nine on the Caymanas Saturday Gold Cup card. The win by Sweet N Smart gave Subratie the last double on the day to include the winner of the Gold Cup, Calculus.
Ridden by Robert Halledeen, Sweet N Smart scored his second win from eight starts in a four-year-and-up non-winners of three for locally bred horses and a non-winners of two for foreigners.
Like a scared hare, Kholbear (Matthew Bennett) set off in front followed by Ajita (Dick Cardenas) with Sweet N Smart settled in third place.
Leaving the half-mile marker, Kholbear increased his lead but Sweet N Smart started to pick up on the inside and with Tomohawk (Anthony Thomas) making headway on the outside.
At the top of the stretch, it was three across the track, Sweet N Smart in the middle, Tomohawk on the outside, and Kholbear racing inside. Kholbear quickly gave way and it was left to Sweet N Smart and Tomohawk to battle it out.
In a stirring last furlong and a half, it was Tomohawk with the lead but Halledeen rallied Sweet N Smart for a final push which brought victory by a short head. Third was No Identity (Omar Walker).
Of note is that Sweet N Smart raced with an equipment change - visor off and blinkers on.
