KINGSTON, Jamaica – Cruella got off the mark with jockey Dick Cardenas closing a double on the day in the Caymanas Saturday seventh.
Cruella trained by Richard Azan gained her first success in a call for three-year-old maidens travelling five furlongs round.
Cardenas and Cruella could not go with early pace set by the tandem of Paraiso (Linton Steadman) and Morse Code (Anthony Thomas), with first-timer Aunt Chico (Dane Dawkins) following the front runners.
In this short sprint, when they turned for home both Paraiso and Morse wilted from their battle for the lead, and Cruella and Cardenas pounced on the outside. Aunt Chico was also going well on the inside with Whispering Magic had to be switched by her rider Oshane Nugent from the inside to the outside.
In a battle royal in the last half a furlong, Cruella got home by three parts of a length. Aunt Chico at 54-1 was second and Whispering Magic third.
