KINGSTON, Jamaica – It was expected and it was done.
Will In Charge was unanimously voted by the 17 journalists and representatives of the promoting company as the 2018 – Horse of the Year.
It was really a no-brainer for the panel after the Robert Pearson-conditioned chestnut horse, bred by Adore The Gold out of the Meadow Flight mare Gem Lea, Will In Charge ended last season with five wins, one second-place finish and a fourth place from seven starts with earnings of $11,833,550.
Will In Charge's victories were in the Legal Light Trophy over 9 furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m) on April 21; the Chairman's Trophy over 7 1/2 furlongs (1,500m) on June 9; the Prime Minister Stakes over 10 furlongs (2,000m) on August 25; Gold Cup over 7 furlongs (1,400m) and the defining moment - the ultra-rich Diamond Mile over 8 furlongs (1,600m) on December 1.
Will In Charge was also voted as champion local-bred horse, top four-year-old and upward stayer and overall champion stayer, top four-year-old and upward middle-distance performer and overall champion middle-distance performer.
First runner-up to the Horse of the Year was Wayne DaCosta's She's A Maneater, while Chace The Great, from the barn of Dwight Chen was the second runner-up to the Horse of the Year.
The champion two-year-old crown went to foreigner Stranger Danger trained by champion Wayne DaCosta.
